Social Media for Learning and Development
ASTD Study Shows Social Media has High Value for Learning and Development
A new research report, The Rise of Social Media: Enhancing Collaboration and Productivity across Generations finds that regardless of generation, workers in the United States believe that social media tools have an important role to play in workplace learning and development
The study also finds that most companies have a long way to go when it comes to implementing social media tools for the learning function. While the vast majority of respondents used social media in their personal lives, only 24 percent said their informal learning at work included social media.
However, more than 80 percent of survey respondents said social media tools would become an important part of the learning function within the next three years

Thai Medical – Health and Wellness Tourism
Some websites promoting Thailand Medical – Health and Wellness Tourism argue that it had 750,000 American medical tourists in 2009 and Thailand will have 6 million medical tourists in 2010
There are significant doubts surrounding these claims by those who argue that hospitals counting visits rather than actual patients, and other distorting factors, artificially inflate the figures. Either way, these are not official figures, just widely used estimates
Many countries actually have two separate figures, one for medical tourism, and one for health and wellness tourism. Including the latter is a nightmare for statisticians: do you count a tourist who goes to a spa-hotel as a medical tourist or a holidaymaker?

e-Auction Business in Thailand
E-auctions (B2G) in Thailand were launched in 2005, during Thaksin Shinawatra’s tenure as prime minister. Under the system, every government procurement worth Bt20 million or more must be undertaken via an e-auction
In 2009 twelve E-auctioneers fight scrapping of system. Three major electronic-auction operators – Biz Dimension, Newtron and Pantavanij have joined forces to resist a proposal by the Joint Private Committee on Commerce, Industries and Banking (JCCIB) that the e-auction system of bidding for government procurement contracts be scrapped
According to the three companies, using the e-auction system has enabled the government to save 6 to 7 per cent of its annual procurement budget of Bt250 billion to Bt300 billion (for government, state enterprise and local administration projects) – or Bt15 billion to Bt20 billion

eCommerce Thai Airways International (THAI)
Thai Airways e-Commerce Strategy 2010 While previously somewhat of an e-Commerce late bloomer, Thai Airways is set to embrace web 2.0 and mobile technology in a large way this year
The airline has previously maintained a website, however, it was more an online channel without a mission to become a source of revenue. From now the internet will be a main channel for new revenue
The airline’s website – www.thaiairways.com – has been renovated and redesigned, giving it full online functions, from flight information to booking, payment and online check-in
Other areas of the airlines e-Commerce strategy include placing internet-based kiosks in department stores, shopping centers and public areas, providing passengers with access to all the services available on the airline’s website or via mobile phones
The airline’s E-Commerce Department was set up in the final quarter of last year, in line with its policy of gearing up for online business. It has deployed e-commerce services such as online bookings and payment for air tickets for about five years, but the services have been available without an aggressive supporting policy

Shitsuke (Discipline) 5S Guide Good Housekeeping
Shitsuke (躾) Sustaining the discipline
5S Guide Good Housekeeping – Refers to maintaining and reviewing standards.
Once the previous 4S’s have been established, they become the new way to operate.
Maintain the focus on this new way of operating, and do not allow a gradual decline back to the old ways of operating.
However, when an issue arises such as a suggested improvement, a new way of working, a new tool or a new output requirement, then a review of the first 4S’s is appropriate.
Shitsuke means discipline as a way of changing habits
Discipline is about how to practice consistently until the right thing is done naturally
It is a way of changing bad habits and creating good one
5S cannot succeed without discipline

Seiketsu (Maintaining) 5S Guide Good Housekeeping Kaizen
Seiketsu (清潔) Standardizing
5S Guide Good Housekeeping Kaizen – Standardized work practices or operating in a consistent and standardized fashion. Everyone knows exactly what his or her responsibilities are to keep above 3S’s.
Seiketsu, or keeping a standard, means making standard the organisation, neatness and cleaning activities, and repeating them to ensure the 5S status is maintained
Having thrown away all unnecessary items and arranged necessary items in good order, the company needs to maintain the good work that has been done
Like many productivity improvement programmes, the 5S movement has to be sustained
By repeating Seiri, Seiton and Seiso activities, the workplace remains clean and well-organised
Seiketsu is achieved through the pride and dedication of staff in maintaining a clean workplace

Seiso (Cleaning) 5S Guide Good Housekeeping Kaizen
Seisō (清掃) Sweeping or Shining or Cleanliness
5S Guide Good Housekeeping Kaizen – Systematic Cleaning or the need to keep the workplace clean as well as neat.
At the end of each shift, the work area is cleaned up and everything is restored to its place. This makes it easy to know what goes where and have confidence that everything is where it should be.
The key point is that maintaining cleanliness should be part of the daily work – not an occasional activity initiated when things get too messy.
Seiso, or cleaning, means more than just clean. It is more a commitment to take responsibility for all the aspects of things that one uses and ensuring that they are kept in tip-top condition
There are three steps to proper cleaning
- Macro Level – Cleaning everything and dealing with the overall causes
- Individual level – Cleaning specific workplaces and machines
- Micro level – Cleaning specific parts and tools and identifying and correcting the cause of grime
